Manager, Materials Processing and Operations Engineer

Working under minimal supervision, this position is responsible for managing the day-to-day operations of Materials Processing. Through subordinate supervisor or professional staff, ensures efficient operations of materials processing to include cage wash, sanitization and distribution of materials. Analyze process flows continually for the enhancements of quality, cost reduction and throughput. The incumbent will require an analytical mindset with strong technical and engineering knowledge, which would have most likely been attained through a combination of higher education and biotech industry experience. This position interacts on a frequent and regular basis with managers or representatives throughout JMS, Purchasing, Human Resources, Engineering, Maintenance, Laboratory Animal Science and Resources, Research, Animal Facility, and Safety and Security in meetings and through individual interactions. Incumbent is responsible for a minimum of $1.4 million dollar operating budget.
Ensure ongoing staff development of a growing department. Manage and resolve human resource, employee and department safety risk and management issues. Perform and oversee responsibilities in regard to supervision of employee performance reviews, scheduling of daily work flow (which could include managing multiple shifts), and corrective actions.
Manage the operation of cleaning and sanitation of animal cages, racks and other related equipment for Operations; monitor supply and demand of materials; develops inventory management and control systems to ensure adequate stock levels. Interface with vendors and service representatives on the procurement of raw materials and services, contracts to ensure materials and supplies meet established specifications and that applicable guidelines are met regarding the quality of the materials received timelines of delivery and product availability. Work consistently with Quality Assurance and Employee Health and Safety to ensure proper safety and quality processes are being followed with the Operations area.
Troubleshoot and resolve technical equipment problems and take corrective action. Keep abreast of new equipment and techniques relating to sanitation operations; recommend changes to Operations department as appropriate. Develops, implement and monitor departmental policies and procedures in the Operations department which support the Laboratory goals and business objectives and ensure they are met. Participate in internal and external procedure audits and site visits by customers and outside agencies.
Develop long and short range goals to address demand for sanitized supplies. Prepare operational reports and analysis. Provide recommendations for improvements. Develop and monitor expense budget for Operations processing.
Interface heavily with maintenance on pure water systems, autoclave/process equipment, and automation and material movement.
